Celia Calle - Illustrator, Fashion designer and Comic Book Artist

Celia Calle is an awesome illustrator, fashion designer and comic book artist. I remember seeing her stuff and it just really blowing me away. Check out the interview below to see how she keeps herself so creative, what she's working on right now, and much, much more!

 

Can you tell us a little about yourself? 

© - A) On a personal end: I'm outgoing, but not social. 

B) On a professional end: I graduated from Parsons/NYC. BFA in Fashion Design.

Held a day job at Calvin Klein [Collections] for a near 3 years, til I realized, waking-up/getting to work after 5pm wasn't amicable to the rest of the team. 

Since that time, I freelanced with ESPN Magazine & got an Adidas campaign, which brought me out into full-time freelance.

Now, I do work for Nike, Penthouse Magazine, DC/Vertigo Comics & various companies.

You have a very unique style, who is your biggest influence? 

© - Movies & Musicians are more of a bigger influence on me & my work, than an individual "Artist/Illustrator". At a very early age (6), I was memorized by the paintings/works of Rene Gruau & Tony Viramonte (both Fashion Illustrators). It's what lead me to the industry. But I've always admired cartoons & animation, I would race home from class to watch Batman (Animated Series), Bugs Bunny & Loony Tunes.

How do you best cultivate your creativity? (Listening to music, looking at other peoples art/your own, etc...) 

© - I used to go with music (when it was still awesomely good). Now, I have a limited list of music I play on repeat before I go haywire. Since then, it's narrowed down to my favorite movies playing on repeat. But now, [as long as it's not a reality show]; anything will do, really. Animal Planet, National Geographic Channel, CNN...,  Sometimes there will be nothing playing [complete silence]; and I wouldn't even notice it.

As for looking through other people's art/artist. I don't have a lot to look at. There's hardly time for research.  =[

© - Copy paper, Mechanic & No.2 Pencils, Photoshop/CS3

What are you working on right now, and what can we expect to see from you in the near future? 

© - A few things I'm currently working on:

1) An 11"X11" FULL COLOR ART BOOK [224 page/Hard Cover] Titled: C.O.O.L.R.I.D.E.R. due out this October. 

It debuts at The New York Comic Con 2010 (October 8-10)

2) I'm also currently working on the art in an issue for DC/VERTIGO Comics Titled: MADAME XANADU [Issue No. 27] Due out later this year.

3) An on-going monthly column [Dear Scoundrel] for PENTHOUSE Magazine.

 

Any advice to young artists/designers? 

© - Don't get cocky.  #2 is right behind you.  ;)

And to stop asking for advice, just go with your gut feelings!
