Monkee had the great pleasure of interviewing Chris Read, a dope director having worked with clients such as; Nike, Hypebeast, Audi, Boxfresh and many others. Chris has really developed his own video aesthetic and creates some beautiful work. Check out what he had to say about where he gets his inspiration, what he's currently working on, and much, much more...
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
im chris. im from LDN and im a video director. sometime photographer.
How did you get to becomming a director? and how did you to promote yourself to get such great clients like Nike, Adidas, Hypebeast, etc...?
erm i studied film at school, enjoyed it. always enjoyed taking photos and framing and generally being behind the lens. worked in tv for a little while, didn't like it, bought a camera, starting shooting stuff I was interested in and then it just came from there. I don't really promote myself as such, it's not like I have an agent or anything, I'm unrepresented. just meeting people and people seeing my work.

Who or what inspires you?
the city mainly. i don't have a car and spend a lot of my time walking around london which is one of my favourite things to do. london is just pure style to me, whether its the architecture to what people wear to how people speak to anything. you know you can go to any neighbourhood and your gonna see someone wearing something that you've never seen before and that looks amazing. i spent a few years away from london and only when i came back did i truly appreciate it.
You have a very gritty yet clean and urban style to your videos, where does your style stem from?
i dont know really. i make sure its in focus and press record. theres no pre-planned idea. in terms of editing, i like to edit late at night because its quiet and im more chilled. whether that influences my style i have no idea?

What are you working on currently? And what can we expect from you in the future?
lots more for hypebeast, a load of personal stuff, possibly a mini doc on some writers in denmark, we'll see.
Any advice to young creatives?
practise.
Big Monkee Love to Chris for the interview. To check out more from Chris, go to his website.
